Special Amenities

The home enjoys a great view across the spit down Waikouaiti Beach and the Matanaka Headland. The very safe Karitane beach is a 5 Minute walk and beyond that you can walk the headland 45min or head south down the beach. On the way to the beach you will pass through the harbour area and picnic grounds. Karitane has a special flavour and I doubt anyone would leave here without being affected.

Special Attractions and Activities Nearby

The estuary below the house has a multitude of birdlife and the occasional playful seal so bring binoculars. The headland walk covers the ground occupied by an historic Pa and history of sealers and whalers. Kayaks can be hired in the harbour with excursions up the estuary or out to sea for the brave. If you have a boat the fishing is great and there are boat charters available as well. The best is the soft sand beaches and gentle waves of Karitane beach which is very safe. There is a 4 Square shop 400m from the bach for essentials and ice creams for the kids. Along the Coast is the historic site of the Seacliff Asylum which has wonderful gardens to explore.

We had a great stay at the Clarks cottage, it is very spacious and homely and the views of the water are amazing. The owners were lovely and very accommodating. We will be back.

I don't write this lightly. Very disappointed. On arrival you could smell the mustiness as soon as you opened the door, The mold inside and outside was a huge problem for my granddaughter or anyone for that matter and we vacated my family who had just flown over from Australia to family in the district that we could fit them in with for Xmas. Our weeklong holiday turned into 4 days scattered all over the place, and we headed back to Christchurch on boxing day so our other families that we stayed with could get on with their Xmas holiday. I emailed Tony & Judy the day we left, explaining our decision and why and have not heard one word from them. Poor form in my opinion, they knew how excited we were when we got the house. We don't care if its old, but we don't like mold. The outside verandah with the cane furniture is covered in black mold which backs onto the lounge. Accommodation should be safe and healthy for paying guests. I could go on. No doubt I'll hear from you now.
Response from Owner
We love our family seaside home as have had many people staying in our family holiday home over the years repeating from year to year. As you can see from the comments very few have had reason to complain. Most had a great time with thanks. This group complaining booked late, obviously wanting 5 star hotel accommodation but instead booked one of the less expensive houses available because its size meant they did not have to book two houses. They have then set about making scathing remarks about a comfortable 120yr old seaside villa. Yes it is not perfect but then you should not expect perfection. The mould they claimed was on the lounge ceiling is drink stains left by previous revelers. The old cane furniture is discoloured due to age, paint loss, salt laden sea mist and are probably just about as old as the house. We did not bother replying to their earlier message as we could see no way past their entitled position. Little was to be achieved replying . Their only reason for writing their commenyts is to hurt us financially through less bookings.
