Sandy Bay is a popular surfing beach and great for fishing off the rocks. There are many walks in the area including a coastal walkway from Sandy Bay to Whananaki North. The rest of the Tutukaka coast contains beaches of outstanding scenic beauty such as Whale Bay and Matapouri. Tutukaka Marina is a base for big game fishing and diving at the Poor Knights Islands plus it boasts a good selection of cafes and restaurants. For the golf lovers there are courses at Whangarei, Hikurangi and nine holes at Ngunguru. If you need supplies on your way here, Whangarei has many supermarkets, however there is a superette at Tutukaka and then a corner store at Matapouri. If you are approching via Hikurangi there is a superette in the main street. Fuel is available at Tutukaka.
