Hunga island is accessed by boat, a short trip, from the township of Neiafu in Vava'u. Boat transfers to Hunga Island are provided in Falau Lelei - or arranged for you and these are an additional cost to guests. Young children travel free. Vava'u - the crown jewel of the Kingdom of Tonga (the Friendly islands) - where sailors from the world over, come to enjoy the placid water, so clear that you can see the bottom at 40 metres. Vava'u is unique in all of the island groups of the world, as it has a naturally protected island and reef system. Hunga Lagoon within the spectacular Vava'u island group of 60 beautiful islands, is very safe for swimming and boating, the snorkling is great. The 525-acre island of Hunga is a lush jungle of assorted tropical trees, with paths to its various cliffs, lookouts, coral reef gardens, white sandy beaches and the big blue deep water lagoon. The lagoon is completely protected from high winds and waves, with an access to the ocean, just outside the small harbour entrance. The tropical trade winds keep the island cool and fresh, year round. Hunga village sits high on the hill above the harbour. Vava’u attracts many humpback whales between June and November each year - as they head from Antarctica to the warm waters of Vava'u. Because of its deep water and its’ geographical location – Hunga island provides sheltered waters and bays which provide a welcome haven and resting place, especially for Humpbacks with calves. Vava'u's protected channels and coral reefs afford glorious opportunities for snorkling and diving - as well as whale watching. The islands figure in Tongan mythology as one of the few islands which were not overfished, and hence thrown down from heaven to land on earth. A destination for those who have the spirit for adventure !

We felt very lucky to stay in this incredible beach house perched as it is on the edge of this idyllic sheltered harbour. So much to do within walking distance of the house or if you prefer you can puddle about and explore the harbour in Mary and Chris' little flotilla of kayaks and sailing dinghys. A couple of hundred metres down the beach close to the 'false [harbour] entrance', you'll find an incredible semi-enclosed coral garden, home to endless species of tropical fish. We found a route up to the western lookout where we saw whales passing (pack your binoculars) and fruit bats fly from roosts behind the house out over the water at dusk. The prevailing trade wind in October is from the east and/or South-east so most nights we had sea breeze blowing into our rooms to cool things down. One'atea is pared back simple island living at its best and Mary and Chris can be relied upon to make your stay painless and memorable.

Absolutely loved staying here while holidaying in Vava'u. A very secluded and peaceful spot with lush vegetation surrounding and ample options for exploring the lagoon. Mary was so helpful with organising boat transfers and general local knowledge. We had an Umu with a local family which was a great was to spend time chatting with locals from the island. Barry the neighbour across the lagoon/manager is an absolute gem. He welcomed us and showed us around. 5 days was not enough! thanks for having us :)
