About this Holiday House
This beautifully presented, 1970s Lockwood cottage is a classic Kiwi bach, fully furnished with a large front deck to take advantage of the morning sun and spectacular panoramic views over the bay to Cape Runaway. Another large deck area behind the cottage gets the afternoon sun and provides a sheltered, private spot for a BBQ and outdoor dining and relaxing.
Waihau Bay Cottage is in one of the most desirable locations in the bay at the quiet cul-de-sac end of Orete Point Road - just 500m from the Waihau Bay Lodge (with a bar and restaurant), boat ramp, wharf, general store and garage - where much of the award-winning movie “Boy” was filmed.
The bay’s unspoiled, rocky shoreline is very picturesque and just opposite the cottage is great for kayaking, diving (kina and crayfish are plentiful) and surfcasting, or just exploring the rock pools. The little inlets are ideal for children to swim in - and lovely for the big kids to cool-off in too! Just a 5-10 minute drive around the bay is the beautiful Oruaiti Beach – a safe, sandy, swimming, surfing or surfcasting beach, considered by many to be the best beach on the East Coast.
Waihau Bay is also renowned as one of the best fishing destinations in the country, as it is very close to the continental shelf. There is an active sports fishing club and boat charters are available. In summer months the warmer water temperatures bring schools of dolphin and game fish such as blue and striped marlin, mahimahi, albacore and skipjack tuna - and still the odd yellowfin, bluefin and big-eye tuna. All year round, the bottom-fishing is good for lovely eating fish such as snapper, terakihi, kingfish, hapuka and more.
Across the bay is Cape Runaway where steep hills slope down to a rocky coastline providing some of the best land-based rock fishing in New Zealand. This area is renowned for its large yellowtail kingfish (November-June) and big snapper (March-November). Land-based fishing options are also available.
