Our Town Whangamata is recognised as being one of the most popular beach resorts in New Zealand. The town is famous for its spectacular ocean beach which provides some of the best surfing breaks, yet safest swimming in the country. The Coromandel Forest Park and Tairua Forest bordering the town provides many outdoor experiences including short walks, mountain bike trails, exploring old gold mining sites and pig hunting. Short trails from forestry roads lead to isolated beaches away from civilisation. We certainly have some not to be missed events our town provides: Beach Hop An annual festival for Rock n Roll Clubs, hot rods, classic cars and motorcycles really put Whangamata on the map. Its popularity is huge and has grown from an estimated 6000 to 65,000 people making it one of the largest events of its kind in the world!! Whanga Week This yearly event first started off in 1986 and has been going strong ever since. It is a great way to kick off summer with seven days of fun and entertainment. Youll find an event for all ages and abilities. Whangamata Run/Walk Festival Whether you try the half marathon, 10km or 5km all three courses take in spectacular views of the ocean beach and pristine bush-clad hills along the way. Enter individually, with friends and family or gather a team together for the business house team event. Fishing We have something for the recreational angler to the big game angler. The Classic Game Fishing Tournament, Nauti Girls and Junior Game Tournament. Sea conditions suitable for all are available along its 6km length, or in the safe estuaries that lie at each end of the beach. These lead out to a section of the Pacific Ocean popular for big game and recreational fishing. With a permanent population of 4000, a weekend population of 8,000 and a New Year population of 50,000 the town has had to grow over recent years! We now offer a variety of shops with a relaxed shopping atmosphere and fabulous cafe culture with plenty of choice, clubs to cater for just about everything.
